Multi-day canoe trip in the Biesbosch

Would you like to explore the Biesbosch not just during the day, but also spend the night? On a multi-day canoe trip through the Biesbosch, you’ll paddle past lush green banks, through winding creeks and along expansive waterways. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the peace, the natural beauty and the freedom to explore the area at your own pace.

You can choose an adventurous canoe camping trip, spending the nights at campsites along the way, or enjoy a relaxing stay in a cosy cabin at Jachthaven van Oversteeg. From the marina, you can set off on different canoe trips and return to your own accommodation after a day on the water.

Whether you prefer heading out with a tent or sleeping in a comfortable bed, there are plenty of ways to combine canoeing with an overnight stay in the Biesbosch.

Why take a multi-day canoe trip through the Biesbosch?

The Biesbosch is a unique nature reserve best explored from the water. Its landscape is made up of winding creeks, vast reed beds, willow forests and small islands.

During a canoe trip, you experience this natural beauty up close. Sitting low on the water, you glide along almost silently. This allows you to hear birds singing among the trees, watch the reeds sway and perhaps even spot signs of beavers along the way.

When you spend several days in the Biesbosch, you have plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings.
There’s no need to discover everything in a single day. You can explore different routes, take regular breaks and experience nature at your own pace.

A different part of the Biesbosch every day

One of the best things about a multi-day canoe trip is the variety.

One day, you might paddle through sheltered creeks, where trees grow right along the water’s edge. The next, you can explore wider waterways with beautiful panoramic views.

The weather and changing seasons also give the landscape a different atmosphere each time.

In the morning, a special kind of stillness sometimes settles over the water. On sunny days, sunlight sparkles between the reeds, while in autumn, the trees turn beautiful shades of colour.

There’s always something new to discover each day.

Which canoe is suitable for a multi-day trip?

When you’re planning a multi-day canoeing and camping trip, it’s important to choose a canoe with enough room for your luggage and equipment. For canoe camping trips, we recommend a two-person Canadian canoe. It offers plenty of space for camping gear and is ideal for two people heading out on an adventure together.

When you rent a canoe, you’ll receive a waterway map and a waterproof barrel for your valuables. Life jackets are available to rent separately.
Are you staying in a cosy cabin and going canoeing each day? Then you’ll need to carry much less luggage. You can leave your belongings in the cabin and only take what you need for your trip.

What should you bring on a multi-day canoe trip?

What you need to bring depends on where and how you plan to spend the night.

Practical tips for multi-day canoeing in the Biesbosch

Good preparation will make your adventure not only more enjoyable, but also safer.

Check the weather forecast
Wind and currents can have a significant impact on your canoe trip. A route that’s easy to paddle in calm weather can become quite challenging in strong winds. Be sure to check the weather forecast before setting off and adjust your plans if conditions require it.

Choose a route that suits you
Take your experience, fitness level and the amount of luggage you’re carrying into account. Avoid planning too many kilometres in a single day, and make sure you leave enough time for the return journey.

Respect nature
Not all parts of the Biesbosch are freely accessible. Stay on permitted waterways, respect restricted areas and follow the guidance on your waterway map and signs along the route. Only camp in designated areas where camping is permitted.

Book your accommodation in advance
Whether you choose to stay at a campsite along the way or in a cosy cabin at Jachthaven van Oversteeg, it’s a good idea to book in advance. Especially during busy periods, accommodation can fill up quickly.

Keep the rental period in mind
At Jachthaven van Oversteeg, multi-day canoe rentals are charged per calendar day, rather than per 24-hour period. For example, if you rent a canoe from Monday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon, this counts as two rental days. Be sure to check the available rental periods in advance and plan your overnight stays accordingly.
