SUP in the Biesbosch

WANT TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT?

Paddling through beautiful creeks and having a picnic on a beach? Then come supping in our beautiful nature reserve the Brabantse Biesbosch.

SUP stands for Stand Up Paddling and was invented by the Hawaiians.

It is currently the fastest growing water sport worldwide. You stand on a SUP board and move forward with a long paddle. Thanks to that paddle you can just stand on the SUP board.

Tips for supping

Start on your knees

If you’re going paddle boarding for the first time, you might think it’s easy to get on your board right away. Perhaps because you can already surf, skateboard, snowboard or ski. Making the first strokes from your knees immediately gives you a sense of balance and ensures that you can stand up easily.

Find the center of the board

The position to stand while supping is about the middle of the board. The reason to stand here is that you optimally distribute the floating surface of your board in this way. This way, not only will your balance feel the best, but you will also make the greatest speed! Place your feet about shoulder-width apart in the middle of the SUP.

Bend your knees lightly

Bend your knees slightly while supping. In this way you can best correct any imbalance caused by waves. If necessary, tighten your abs and keep your back straight.

The paddle is your balance

Just before you fall for the first time you will do exactly what you shouldn’t do, take your paddle out of the water to find your balance. The paddle in the water ensures your total balance. Because you use the paddle, this will not only provide balance, but also determine the pace. The speed of your sup also ensures that you have balance. Stalling is therefore not convenient for a novice supper.

Hold your paddle well

It is important to have the correct paddle length. Of course, the length of your paddle also depends on what you like, but the rule is that your paddle should be approximately between 20 and 30 cm larger than your height. The idea is that you extend both elbows so that the rotation of the paddling comes from your abs and not from your arms. If you paddle on the right side, your left hand is on top and vice versa. Make sure there is enough space between the upper and lower hand.

Paddle the right way

The paddle has a clear front and back. Place the paddle in the water in front of you with the concave side facing you. Insert it at an angle into the water until the entire spoon of the paddle is submerged and pull it towards you.

Use a sup leash

A leash is an ankle cord. This ensures that if you fall off the sup that the sup stays close and you can quickly climb back on. I don’t think we need to explain it for waves, but with wind on flat water your sup can quickly drift away.

Relax and look around you

If you are tense on your board, there is nothing to it. Falling is not a big deal and rarely hurts. By enjoying and looking around at the beautiful nature in the Biesbosch you will find your balance in a natural way.
