The perfect middle ground
Three hours of stand-up paddleboarding through the Biesbosch
Want to venture further into nature without spending an entire day on the water? Then a three-hour SUP route through the Biesbosch is the perfect middle ground.
You’ll have plenty of time to leave the hustle and bustle behind, explore smaller waterways and simply pause your paddling every now and then. Because when you’re stand-up paddleboarding in the Biesbosch, the journey is just as important as the destination.
Explore the Biesbosch from Van Oversteeg
Start at Jachthaven van Oversteeg and paddle out of the marina towards Gat van den Hardenhoek. From there, continue towards Catharina Plaatjes and Sloot beneden Petrus. Then turn left, where you’ll spot the beach at Rietplaat, a lovely place to take a break and unwind.
You can find all these place names on the marina’s water map.
This is where you really start to feel immersed in the heart of the Biesbosch.
Water ahead of you. Greenery all around. And a new view around every bend.
Towards Rietplaat
Around Rietplaat, the landscape becomes increasingly varied. On the map, you can see a network of waterways winding between areas such as Catharina Plaatjes, Buisjes and Honderd en Dertig. That’s exactly what makes stand-up paddleboarding in the Biesbosch so appealing.
There’s no need to rush. In fact, taking it slow is often much more enjoyable here.
From your board, you have plenty of time to admire the scenery along the banks and listen to the sounds coming from the reeds.
A route to truly experience the Biesbosch
During a longer SUP trip, you’ll notice how quickly you settle into a different rhythm. At first, you might still be focusing on your balance and paddling technique. But after a while, it all starts to come naturally.
You start to take in more of your surroundings. You notice more of the sounds of nature.
And suddenly, three hours doesn’t seem long at all.
Bring something to drink
For this route, it’s a good idea to bring some water and perhaps a snack. Along the way, find a suitable spot where stopping is permitted, take a short break and enjoy the view.
Be mindful of nature and leave nothing behind. After all, the Biesbosch is at its most beautiful when we all help keep it that way.
Paddling back through the creeks
Depending on the wind, currents and your own pace, you can make your way back to Jachthaven van Oversteeg from the area around Gat van de Buisjes.
Before setting off, ask us which waterways are best suited to the conditions that day. The map also shows restricted areas, shallow water and sections where motorboats are not permitted.
Who is this route suitable for?
This trip is best suited to those who have tried stand-up paddleboarding before or have enough stamina to enjoy a few hours of relaxed paddling.
You don’t need to be an experienced paddleboarder. However, feeling a little more confident on your board will make the trip much more enjoyable.
Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare for a three-hour SUP trip?
Make sure you’re well rested before setting off and bring plenty to drink. On sunny days, protect yourself from the sun and only bring the things you really need for your trip.
Keep your valuables in a waterproof bag or container.
Can I shorten my SUP route along the way?
That depends on your chosen route and the waterways you take. Before setting off, ask us where you could turn back early if needed. This can be helpful if the wind, currents or your own energy levels make the trip more challenging than expected.
Can I paddleboard anywhere in the Biesbosch?
No, not every part of the Biesbosch is freely accessible. The waterway map shows areas where access is prohibited. Please respect these restrictions and follow any signs or instructions along the way.
What should I do if the weather changes while I'm paddleboarding?
If you notice the weather getting significantly worse, put safety first and shorten your trip. Strong winds and thunderstorms are especially good reasons to avoid staying out on open water any longer than necessary.
