Sup routes in the Biesbosch

You don’t have to paddle far to feel like you’ve truly got away from it all. From Jachthaven van Oversteeg, the Biesbosch is right on your doorstep. Step onto your SUP, leave the marina behind and, before you know it, boats and jetties give way to reeds, willows and open water.

This short SUP route through the Biesbosch takes around 1.5 hours and is ideal if you’re trying stand-up paddleboarding for the first time or simply want to spend a few hours enjoying nature.

From the marina towards Gat van den Hardenhoek

From Jachthaven van Oversteeg, paddle towards Gat van den Hardenhoek. On the water map, this is the waterway that runs south from the marina, past Polder Jantjesplaat and towards Catharina Polder.

The landscape soon begins to change. Buildings fade into the background as green riverbanks take over the view.

You experience this very differently on a SUP than from a motorboat. Instead of sitting inside a boat, you’re standing right on the water. You hear your paddle, the reeds along the banks and the birds all around you.

Paddling gently along Jantjesplaat

The area around Jantjesplaat and Polder Hardenhoek is ideal for a peaceful paddle. The water map shows several smaller waterways and nature areas here. There are also sections where motorboats are not permitted.

That’s exactly what makes this area so appealing for stand-up paddleboarders: you can paddle at a leisurely pace and simply take in the scenery around you.

Take your time. A SUP trip doesn’t have to be a race.

Taking a moment to pause is part of the experience.

See something moving among the reeds? Stop paddling for a moment. You might hear nothing but birdsong. You might see a fish dart away just beneath your board. And if you’re lucky, one of the Biesbosch’s inhabitants may make an appearance.

Those are often the moments you remember long after your trip.
